Pleading with the Youth to participate in Agriculture

Published by Dolphine Allaro on

Whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and animal produce- which can only be produced through agriculture, are very essential to human beings. For this reason, we need more young people to be involved in agriculture to enhance food security. Agriculture is vital and youths have a role to play in boosting this important sector.

In this digital world, technology can be used to solve many problems. We have a lot in tech that can ease agricultural operation, not just the physical labor but also in communication and ensuring products are delivered on time. Technology is of great use in agriculture.

Agricultural technology can be applied to ensure a sustainable economy through agriculture. Using technologies such as sensors, devices, machines, and information technology can help us make great steps. The youth can use sophisticated technologies such as robots, temperature and moisture sensors, aerial images, and GPS technology, for more profit, efficiency, safety, and reduced negative impacts on ecosystems. These technologies also give agriculturists greater control over plant and animal production, processing, distribution, and storage as they enable more reliable monitoring and management of natural resources, such as air and water quality.

Today social media platforms provide a good market to sell farm produce. Google also provides easy and cheap research tools that young people can use to get information about agriculture. Google has information on climate change and agricultural trends that persons in agriculture can use. A well-informed farmer can make informed decisions based on well-done research.

Although a lot has been achieved, there is still a lot more to be done. More research is needed on how best tech can progress agriculture. Research and incorporating disciplines such as Engineering, Computer Science, and physical sciences will help in the development of more agricultural devices and systems.

Youths need to be empowered in matters of agriculture. Creating awareness on tech use in agriculture will increase youths’ involvement in agriculture. Youths in agriculture will ensure that there is food security and surplus to export, therefore, generating revenue for the country.

Getting involved in agriculture doesn’t mean carrying a jembe all day. This mentality needs to be done away with. Agriculture is more than just digging away on a farm. Youths need the help of experts, organizations involved with agriculture, among others to thrive in agriculture. They need to mobilize, form groups, develop ideas, and get started. It’s today! Not tomorrow! Just from the simple agricultural investment, we can become great entrepreneurs and for sure it is rewarding.
