Standing Up For Adolescents and Teen Mothers!

The Organization of Africa Youth Kenya being a member of The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health under the Adolescents and youth constituency worked in the formation of a toolkit “Advocating for Change for Adolescents! A Practical Toolkit for Young People to Advocate for Improved Adolescent Health and Well-being” The toolkit can be found here.  OAY is currently working on dissemination of the toolkit in Kenyan schools (hosts of most adolescents), the community (they directly impact on the health and wellbeing of the adolescents), and the youth advocates.

OAY is also to advocating for a reduction in teenage pregnancies in Kenya, specifically in Nairobi county, Siaya county and Kisumu county. This is birthed by the rising cases of teenage pregnancies in Kenya, and the adverse effects it has on the general health and wellbeing of the adolescents. OAY recognizes the potential growth in a country with zero school drop outs as a result of teen pregnancies, zero discrimination of the already pregnant teens so that they can seek medical attention and have safe deliveries to healthy babies, and zero tolerance for those who cause teen pregnancies through defilement; the need to stand up and speak for this vulnerable yet vital group… and the journey has just begun!
